Four Buddhist Viharas have been opened in Staten Island, New York, New Jersey, South Carolina and Boston, MA as branches of the New York Buddhist Vihara in order to facilitate the needs of devotees in and around those localities.
The Staten Island Buddhist Vihara in Staten Island was opened on July 15th, 1999 under the patronage of Ven. Kurunegoda Piyatissa Thero with Ven. Heenbunne Kondañña Thero as the resident monk. Among the programs is a regularly scheduled Dhamma school for children.

Before it was opened, Buddhist families from Staten Island and nearby neighborhoods had no alternative but to come all the way to New York Buddhist Vihara to practice their religious rites; hence the suggestion to have a separate Buddhist Vihara for Staten Island. This was well received by the American-Sri Lanka Buddhist Association which kindly put up the required down-payment to purchase a building for the Vihara. Our friends and well-wishers in the area not only played a big role in finding a suitable building but also very generously provided financial and other material assistance and offered their services in renovating the building.

The South Carolina Buddhist Vihara opened on December 10th, 2001 under the patronage of Ven. Kurunegoda Piyatissa Thero is the result of the steadfast efforts of the friends of Buddhism in the area led by Mr. & Mrs. Cumar Wijayawickrama who for a long time were yearning for a Buddhist Vihara to cater to the Buddhist communities in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and neighboring states. The vihara is overseen by the resident nun Bhikkhuni Suddhamma. She is a student disciple of Ven. Bhante Gunaratana.

The Buddhist Vihara branch in New Jersey was opened on January 5, 2002 under the patronage of Ven. Kurunegoda Piyatissa Thero with Ven. Hunganpola Siriratana Thero as the resident monk. Here too, the difficulties the New Jersey Buddhists had to undergo in traveling to New York and the time involved therein necessitated the opening of a separate Vihara in New Jersey to serve its Buddhist population.

The New England Buddhist Vihara Meditation Center is currently being established in Framingham, Mass. under the direction of Ven. Dhammjothi.
